Tokyo, July 11, 2025 – A commemoration was held today in the capital of Japan on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica, organized by educational institutions from Japan (Kaichi Nihonbashi Gakuen) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (Third Gymnasium Sarajevo), as part of the Miraiba youth exchange. The event brought together students, teachers, parents, representatives of local authorities and diplomatic missions, in order to honor the victims of genocide in a dignified manner and to affirm messages of peace and shared responsibility.
The program includes a presentation on the historical context in which the genocide was committed, messages from students, an artistic display of memory, and messages from representatives of the educational and diplomatic sectors. Special focus was on the importance of educating young people and the role that the international community plays in preventing genocide and denying crimes.
The participants emphasized the importance of the adopted resolution of the UN General Assembly on Srebrenica, which calls for the global observance of July 11 as a day of remembrance, and obliges members to ensure understanding of the events of July 1995 through the education system.
“Srebrenica is a universal warning, a warning for the future of our civilization. Education is our most important tool to build a future in which crimes like this will never happen again,” Miraiba project coordinator Kerim Hadžić said during the commemoration.
Only by knowing historical facts, calling events by their true names and truly facing historical facts can we lay serious foundations for a better world without wars, which we strive for and which, unfortunately, we do not have today, is the key message of this gathering.
The commemoration was realized as part of the Miraiba project, which for the third year now connects students from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Japan with the aim of promoting peace, understanding and shared values. The report on the commemoration and marking of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, as announced, will be broadcast on the central news program of the Japanese national television TBS, on Friday, July 12.
